TRANSPORTATION DEPARTMENTWe are the largest human-service provider within the Southside Planning District.Every week our vehicles travel routes and work with Social Service Agencies, Health Department and other facilities for the elderly. For example, in 2000 we traveled approximately 600,00 miles and delivered 125,000 meals to the congregate and homebound senior citizens. Transportation is provided throughout the counties of: Mecklenburg, Brunswick, and Halifax. We also transport as far as Richmond, VA; Durham, NC and other locations. We provide wheel chair accessible Medicaid Transportation to all medical facilities. If you have a medical appointment and no way to get there, just call us. We do require a 48 hour notice prior to the scheduled appointment time. OUR DRIVERS Our Transportation drivers have a variety of duties other than driving. They pack and deliver meals to congregate and homebound seniors, and check on the condition of the homebound seniors.We have preventative vehicle maintenance system recognized throughout the state. We have traveled in excess of 1.3 million miles without an accident resulting in an injury. Our drivers are trained in Passenger Assistance Techniques, First Aid, CPR, and Defensive Driving. Our drivers are in constant communication with Lake Country Area Agency on Aging. Each vehicle is equipped with a two-way radio system. When clients are transported out of the radio-service area, a cellular telephone is provided. CONTRIBUTIONS Contributions are very important to the continuation of the Transportation Program. There is no charge for transportation provided to eligible individuals. We appreciate any donations. Envelopes and receipts for contributions are provided by the van drivers.
